Grand Street Community Arts’ Vacant Lot Project

Earlier this summer, Bennett, Mikey and myself decided to play a modest part in community outreach by documenting the Grand Street Community Arts’ Vacant Lot Project. The VLP began in 2009 in response to the staggering amount of vacant lots present in the South End neighborhood of Albany, NY. Working with The City of Albany's Vacant Lot Stabilization Program, the GSCA is overseeing the rehabilitation of four lots, two city-owned and two privately-owned. ... Continue Reading

Albany Zombie Walk 2010

Halloween is around the corner, the Horde is back! Here is another edition of Albany's very own Zombie Walk. The highlight of the Zombie Film Feast 3 took place at the Armory last Saturday, October 23rd, and gathered a dense crowd of Undead on a slow march to The Linda. The whole weekend featured many returning events, such as the Brain Eating contest, the Thriller Dance Off, the Senior Prom and the screening of Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead ... Wolff’s Oktoberfest 2010

Is Wolff's Oktoberfest stomping on LarkFEST? Matt Baumgartner's German love child turned one last Saturday and boy did he get much much bigger. The 2009 edition was a success but I guesstimated at least 3 times more people showed up this year to engulf a record-breaking amount of beer and sausage. Best of all, everybody seem pretty well behaved, I saw more obnoxious drunks the week before on Lark. Victim of its success, the event experienced a few issues to ... Continue Reading

LarkFEST 2010

This is the time, this is the place, LarkFEST 2010, “New York's Largest One Day Street Festival” is on. Two stages of live music and entertainments including visual arts, music, poetry, magic acts, dancing and food. 80,000 people were expected to attend this year; while I can't confirm this number, Lark Street felt as packed as ever (update: it was 70,000). Center Square neighbors, including myself, know the drill. Either leave Albany for the day, or embrace the crowd, the ... Continue Reading

Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival 2010

Thanks to Nippertown, I won 2 tickets for the Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival at SPAC last Saturday. The Festival, presented in partnership with the Italian Trade Commission  and the Saratoga Automobile Museum, offered three days of events showcasing fine wines, food and luxury automobiles. My friend Mikey and I spent an hour taking pictures of the many Ferrari's and Alfa Romeo's, then traded our cameras for an assortment of forks and toothpicks. I savored the samples ... SunKiss Balloon Festival 2010

When did I become a sucker for hot air balloons? I didn't really know until now, but I'm suspecting a case of balloonitis. I had a great time taking pictures of the Moon Glow a few months ago in Cambridge, NY; these are still some of my favorite photos this year actually. I've been keeping an eye on festivals in the area since then, looking for more balloon on balloon action. When I heard about the SunKiss Balloon Festival in ... Continue Reading

Capital Pride 2010

Capital Pride 2010

The annual Capital Pride Festival took place today in Albany's Washington Park, starting with the traditional parade in Center Square. The Capital Pride itself kicked off Tuesday June 1st with a flag raising at City Hall; there were 40 events throughout the 13 days of Pride, culminating with the Parade and Festival. Unfortunately it rained a lot this weekend, Capital-District-"where is my goddamn' summer?"-style, bringing fewer participants and floats. A good turnout nonetheless. This year marked the 40th Anniversary of ... Continue Reading

Moon Glow in Cambridge, NY

I have wanted to take photos of hot balloons for a while now. My buddy Paul shot a beautiful panorama of the Adirondack Balloon Festival in 2008, but I was unable to make it last year. Let's blame it on the heavy rain or the impossibly early hour. 5AM, that's crazy talk. Last weekend my friend C. and I laughed at the tornado alert and drove to Cambridge, NY to check the Moon Glow at the Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival ... Continue Reading
