Color Me Rad Albany 2012

Color Me Rad Albany 2012

This past Saturday morning I found yet another excuse to pick up cider donuts at Altamont Orchards by stopping at the Color Me Rad 5K Run for a few photos. The race, to benefit the Special Olympics New York, took place at the fairgrounds and promised to be colorful. Victim of its success, it also promised to be a nightmare for the small town of Altamont, gridlocking Route 20 & 146 for miles.  “Rad” didn't die in the 80's, after all. A 75% female attendance ... Grafton Lakes Winterfest 2012

It has been a strange, snowless winter so far in the Capital District but this didn't stop the Grafton Lakes State Park and the Friends of Grafton from organizing their 27th annual Winter Festival last Saturday. A merciful deity delivered a few inches of snow that very morning but the bitter cold and unknown road conditions discouraged many from attending. Once again, kudos to the small dozen of adventurous people who jumped in the Long Pond, you guys made me ... Continue Reading

Troy Victorian Stroll 2011

Troy Victorian Stroll 2011

Today marked the 29th annual Troy Victorian Stroll downtown Troy, NY. Since I took photographs of the Saratoga Victorian Streetwalk in 2010 and I had not been to the Victorian Stroll since 2006, it seemed only fair I give a little love to the Collar City on this beautiful day. The historic streets of Troy were packed once again for this annual holiday tradition and I have no doubt you will find hundreds of photos online come tomorrow, featuring bedazzled ... Albany Zombie Walk 2011

Albany Zombie Walk 2011

Another Halloween, another Zombie Walk. A very well-behaved horde walked down Central Av. from The Linda to the corner of Robin St. to get the Zombie Film Feast 4 going. Also on the agenda this year, the Brain Eating contest, the Zombie carnival, the Senior Prom, and the Capitol Pride Singers proudly presenting a selection of their favorite undead songs. Was it the many undead holding their cell-phones in the air to record the walk, was it the very proximity ... Continue Reading

Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival 2011

Thanks to All Over Albany, I won two tickets for the Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival in Saratoga Springs last Saturday. The event, presented by the Italian Trade Commission, the Saratoga Automobile Museum and The Committee For Excessively Long Festival Names encompassed a series of events showcasing wine, food and design. Chrissy and I spent an hour sampling chocolate, fermented grape juice, chocolate, elaborate snacks, and more chocolate. This time around I strategically opted to de-drunk for ... Continue Reading

ASAP’s Second Annual Fort Orange Olympics

A quick shout-out to the guys and gals of ASAP who organized a mighty fun “decathlon” last Saturday in Lincoln Park, Albany. This second iteration of the Fort Orange Olympics featured the best in 4th grade field day activities, favorites such as the shoe kick, dizzy bat and wheelbarrow race, all the way to the more adult keg toss. It was hilarious to watch and instructive as well. I can now add Dizzy Bat to the list of American games we ... Continue Reading

South End Earth Day 2011

A few weeks ago the Grand Street Community Arts along with AVillage Inc. and the South End Neighborhood Association organized a great community event to celebrate Earth Day in Albany's South End. A small army of volunteers gathered at Elizabeth Park on this bright Saturday morning and accomplished an astonishing amount of work. Give me a shovel and it is likely I will accidentally decapitate myself, so I decided to help out by taking pictures of the event for the ... Continue Reading

Grafton Lakes Winterfest 2011

Single-digit temperatures? A great day to hit the beach. Grafton Lakes State Park and the Friends of Grafton hosted the 26th annual Winter Festival and Ice Fishing Contest last Saturday. The highlight of the day rested squarely on the shoulder of the annual Polar Plunge into Long Pond. Tip of the hat to the two dozens of courageous people who jumped in the freezing waters for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I'm pretty certain I also saw a giant, mutant trout, ... Continue Reading

Santa Speedo Sprint 2010

This year's Santa Speedo Sprint 2010 in Albany, NY was a lot of fun. This nationwide event, started in Boston in 2000 by five intrepid men, is held every winter to raise money for charities. The Albany Santa Speedo Sprint is organized locally by the great folks at The Albany Society for the Advancement of Philanthropy. ASAP (photo above) is a non-profit “with the express purpose of encouraging others to do well by their fellow man. [...] It was started ... Continue Reading

Saratoga Victorian Streetwalk 2010

Thursday marked the 24th annual Victorian Streetwalk downtown Saratoga Springs, NY. I was in town to support my friend Zoë Lobdell for her first photo show and decided to hit the main avenue a little later. It was packed. Broadway was blocked from 6 to 10 p.m. and thousands of people had gathered despite the frigid cold. If you are not familiar with this American tradition, imagine an old-fashioned street party in celebration of the holiday season. Add people in ... Continue Reading
