The Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the Times Union Center

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the Times Union Center

'Tis the Night after Christmas, hair flying, flames erupting, power-chords screaming, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra must be back in town. I'm not a progressive-rock fan but I'm a sucker for a good light show. When my friend R. mentioned she had two seats in a suite at the TU Center, I seized the opportunity to witness the visual debauchery that is TSO. Two hours and fifteen minutes later, I had filled my camera with 200 frames and heard the word “Christmas” ... Continue Reading

Company of Thieves at PearlPalooza 2011

For many of us LarkFEST is the festival that marks the end of the summer in Albany, the last, proverbial opportunity to enjoy live music for free, a beer in hand. This year was a little different as the second iteration of PearlPalooza popped up only a week after its Lark Street drunken sibling. Despite the unfortunate timing, a great crowd assembled on Pearl Street where two stages—one for national acts, the other for locals—had been setup. The 2010 edition ... Continue Reading

Camp Bisco X Recap

Camp Bisco X Recap

This past Saturday I headed to Mariaville, NY to rekindle with Camp Bisco, Northeast’s largest electronic-rock festival. It had been five years since I last attended Disco Biscuits's musical creation and I found myself in the middle of a much bigger and louder maelstrom. The 10th annual music and arts festival boasted more than 100 performances on five stages over the course of three days and three nights. I was still on the West Coast the first two days but ... Camp Bisco X is around the Corner

Camp Bisco, the Northeast's largest electronic-rock festival, is right around the corner. The 10th annual music and arts festival features 3 nights with over 100 performances at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, July 7-9. I mention local shows on this blog now and then but most often after I get back with some photos. A quick shout-out won't hurt though, there is still time to get tickets. A 3-day pass will set you back a good $160 while ... Continue Reading

Future Rock at Red Square

Future Rock at Red Square

Future Rock, the electrifying trio from Chicago, paid the Capital District a little visit a few weeks ago. I had the chance to catch this intense electronica band at Northern Lights last year, Red Square in 2009, Valentines in 2007, and Camp Bisco V in 2006. I guess that makes me a fan at this point, the kind that won't miss an opportunity to drag you along when they tour the 518. Future Rock fuses progressive house and dance rock, ... Continue Reading

Exit Dome 4 at WEXT/WMHT Studios

Last Saturday I attended Exit Dome IV, a benefit show for local radio WEXT 97.7 featuring some great 518 performers. WEXT has been playing local music a lot for about four years now, I can get behind the idea of returning the favor. There is really no shortage of good bands in the Capital District, and if you like live music, loads of opportunities to support them when they play out. They aren't too difficult to find either, listen to ... Continue Reading

The New Deal at Northern Lights

The New Deal at Northern Lights

A few photos of The New Deal concert, taken September 23rd at Northern Lights, Clifton Park, NY. I'm a fan of this Canadian electronic band. Formed in 1998, they have visited the Capital District regularly for years, most often at the (now defunct) Revolution Hall in Troy. It is a tad tricky to pinpoint this music genre. Some say electronica, others live progressive breakbeat house, and Wikipedia files them under livetronica, a "jam band movement that blends such musical styles ... Continue Reading

LarkFEST 2010

This is the time, this is the place, LarkFEST 2010, “New York's Largest One Day Street Festival” is on. Two stages of live music and entertainments including visual arts, music, poetry, magic acts, dancing and food. 80,000 people were expected to attend this year; while I can't confirm this number, Lark Street felt as packed as ever (update: it was 70,000). Center Square neighbors, including myself, know the drill. Either leave Albany for the day, or embrace the crowd, the ... Continue Reading
