A quick shout-out to the guys and gals of ASAP who organized a mighty fun “decathlon” last Saturday in Lincoln Park, Albany. This second iteration of the Fort Orange Olympics featured the best in 4th grade field day activities, favorites such as the shoe kick, dizzy bat and wheelbarrow race, all the way to the more adult keg toss. It was hilarious to watch and instructive as well. I can now add Dizzy Bat to the list of American games we sorely miss in France, close behind Spin the Bottle and Seven Minutes in Heaven (would you believe that?). Registration was $100 for co-ed teams of 4, all proceeds to benefit the Police Athletic League.
There are about 60 photos in this series, feel free to check the whole slideshow on Flickr or the thumbnails. Pictures are divided by activities below.
I have mentioned the good people behind The Albany Society for the Advancement of Philanthropy before and I’ll do it again. ASAP is a non-profit “with the express purpose of encouraging others to do well by their fellow man. [...] It was started as a way to give back to the Albany area in a way that was enjoyable for all involved; to encourage philanthropy and have a good time while doing so”. Their major event has to be the Santa Speedo Sprint taking place every winter but there are a lot more rewarding opportunities to assist throughout the year. I like to fight the idea that Albany doesn’t have anything to offer, I’ve mentioned community events on this blog and I regard ASAP as a great group of people any fun, helping adult can join. I’ll let the photos do the work, contact ASAP or the ASAP Daisies for more info.
Good old fashion wheelbarrow race. If you check the thumbnails above you will find a contestant wearing a kilt. You may or may not regret it.
I spent a lot of time my nose in the grass that day, which I found very comfortable in comparison. Check the thumbnails to see why.
I think we can all agree that Jasen, above, can lift a thing or two.
I had no clue what dizzy bat was. I suspect a drinking game. We don’t really have bat technology in Frenchland, it’s just soccer, soccer, and more soccer. I could mention the Tour de France but that’s as much a serious sport as WWE is.
Hang in there buddy.Error! :
A few teams found a loophole and did much better by rotating around the bat 5 times in one direction, then 5 times in the other direction to compensate. Sneaky bat. Check the thumbnails for more precious faces (sorry, Mel).
Pictured above, a very ambitious and suspenseful passing of the egg.
Can you name that game for me? I was going for the conjoint race but that doesn’t sound quite right (update: 3 legged race, duh).
ASAP provides a fast track to join the circus too.
Funny how this keg was flying towards me.

That’s about it for a small sample, the rest can be found on Flickr but honestly, you should try for yourself!
