South End Earth Day 2011 - Albany, NY - 2011, Apr - 14.jpg

A few weeks ago the Grand Street Community Arts along with AVillage Inc. and the South End Neighborhood Association organized a great community event to celebrate Earth Day in Albany’s South End. A small army of volunteers gathered at Elizabeth Park on this bright Saturday morning and accomplished an astonishing amount of work. Give me a shovel and it is likely I will accidentally decapitate myself, so I decided to help out by taking pictures of the event for the better part of April 30th. This is something Mikey, Bennett and myself had done already in 2010 when we volunteered to document the Grand Street Community Arts’ Vacant Lot Project. I had a great time back then and I hear the photographs were put to very good use. With eight different sites to cover we certainly had our work cut out for us this time.

I came back with a lot of pictures, which I trimmed down to a count of 70. Here’s hoping that some of the photographs on this page will inspire you to get involved in this neighborhood, or your own. This is only a glimpse at the great work a community can get done when they came together.

Pictured below, Ken Bevis presenting a $5,000 grant on behalf of Waste Management, sponsor of the event. Gotta love giant checks. Quoting Dylan Boyce, Vacant Lot Coordinator:We couldn’t have done this without them. I also think it is impressive that everything you saw happen was done within that budget. Being able to do a lot with a little is one of the things GSCA prides itself on”.

Elizabeth Street Park, 4th St. and Elizabeth St.

We gathered in Elizabeth Park for the Kickoff Ceremony at 9AM. Public representatives, coordinators and kids shared the mic gracefully, expressing a genuine love for this neighborhood. All day long organizers made sure to assign volunteers to different sites in the South End. A garage sale for Japan Relief and a few workshops took place at that location as well. BBQ with live music? Check!

Below, just a few of the tools put to good use that day. The city provided compost and mulch on all the sites and ingenious portable dumpsters were filled in no time.

Capital Region Permaculture Guild, 84-92 Catherine St.

I was eager to witness the progress made on this vacant lot. As I mentioned earlier, Bennett, Mikey and myself tried to play a modest part in community outreach last year by documenting the Grand Street Community Arts’ Vacant Lot Project. The VLP began in 2009 in response to the staggering amount of vacant lots present in Albany’s South End neighborhood. The mission of GSCA is to create unity and connection, especially through the arts, in an inner-city neighborhood with racial and economic diversity. The key idea is to involve and empower South End residents, help transform these eyesores of no economic or social value into meaningful parts of the urban landscape.

South End Earth Day 2011 - Albany, NY - 2011, Apr - 24.jpg

Incredibly enough, most of the flowerbeds above, including this huge one, did not exist at 9AM. Pictured above and below, community members and volunteers are working on a two-part community park, proposed and organized by Capital Regional Permaculture Guild members Sharon Hoffman & Julia Von der Reith. Half of the lot will be a low-maintenance native plant garden with benches, sculptures and paths. The other half will be a “urban meadow” where plants proven to absorb heavy metals and other contaminants help clean the soil, eventually rendering it safe enough to grow fruits and vegetables. This later process is known as phytoremediation. The whole lot was also thoroughly cleaned, new flowers were planted and the water catchment system painted anew.

Many community groups have been working on the project since last Spring –Saint Rose Environmental Club, Sienna Bonners, and SUNY students to name a few. More photos below, a dozen of people worked on the lot that day and the result was spectacular. Click on a thumbnail or follow this Flickr tag for a slideshow:

Youth Organics, South Hawk St. and 3rd Av.

YO! is a garden project engaging and partnering with youth through skills training in sustainable agriculture and community organizing. They provide leadership opportunities, a challenging environment in which to grow and a space for personal development, especially the improvement of health and nutrition. Ultimately, they seek to create a just, local, sustainable community food system where everyone has access to safe, healthy foods, regardless of income, where farmers receive a fair price for the food they produce, and the land and the people are once again in a healthy relationship.

South End Earth Day 2011 - Albany, NY - 2011, Apr - 53.jpg

We hung out with Youth Organics’ program coordinator Rana Morris (above in the back) and her volunteers for a while, as they cleaned up the lot and planted a few, soon to be delicious, fruit trees. Below, Rana blowing my mind after pointing at a graft on a new tree. Surprisingly (to me), this youngling is actually made of two trees; the lower part belongs to a tree with stronger roots, while everything above her finger is the fruit tree itself. The combination makes for a more robust plant.

Radix Center, Warren St. and Grand St.

The Radix Ecological Sustainability Center (Facebook, AOA) is a new not-for-profit educational organization whose purpose is to promote ecological literacy and environmental stewardship through educational programs based around demonstrations of sustainable technologies. The Center will teach practical skills that can be applied to create community self-reliance and environmental sustainability. An emphasis is placed on issues of food security, health, and the remediation of contaminated soils. In addition to beautifying a vacant lot, the Center will offer hands-on workshops and tours not only to area school groups, but to interested citizens throughout the Northeast.

South End Earth Day 2011 - Albany, NY - 2011, Apr - 15.jpg

The picture used on top of this post and above is the new Radix Greenhouse, built in the past few weeks. It will be heated by passive solar and bio-thermal sources for year-round food production. I was thrilled to see this structure standing right in the middle of the city, what a sight. The goats were overly friendly too. Radix co-founder Scott Kellogg told me that the construction is nearly complete and that we should check it out later this summer. Will do. Slow Loris has a cool time lapse of its construction, seen below.

Scott and Stacy Pettigrew had recently applied for a Sunmark Startup grant from All Over Albany and were amongst the 2 finalists chosen by votes, and won. Congrats! The money will be used to build an aquaculture system for the new greenhouse (aquatic plants and animals raised in a closed loop nutrient recycling system).

Rainbow Park, Alexander St. and Clinton St.

We caught up with the Giffen Elementary PTA and The Stakeholders at the Rainbow Park a few times during the day. They cleaned-up, spread mulch, put up swings and painted the playground. Here are before and after pictures. Impressive, right? The Stakeholders is a non-profit organization founded on the belief that people are key to the sustainability of New York’s Capital Region. They seek to retain and attract residents, workers and visitors and foster regional pride by connecting individuals with area resources and providing enrichment through various programs.

AVillage Inc., corner of 4th Av. and  Elizabeth St.

AVillage Inc. is a grass roots group working to improve, enrich and empower the lives of children and families in the communities here in Albany. They strive to work with other community organizations to bring more resources and events to the people of the South End. They did great planting grass seed and flowers on this small lot. Pictured below, Lester Freeman, Ward 2 Alderperson, and AVillage Inc. Executive Director Willie White on the right. Mr. White is such an energetic and good-natured person, the kids loved to work with him.

Hidden away behind a church, a few volunteers from the Mother Teresa Community and the Peter Young Housing, Industry and Treatment Program (PYHIT) wasted no time to plant strawberries, vegetables, and ornamentals. Unfortunately we didn’t get to pay a second visit but if you need somebody to try the strawberries later this year, go ahead and twist my arm.

Thanks

I think we missed a couple sites that were much further away, sorry about that. Thanks to GSCA Executive Director Tom McPheeters. Thanks to our primary contact Dylan Boyce, Vacant Lot Coordinator, for keeping in touch with us in 2011 and helping us document this event. Thanks to Sharon Hoffman and all the Capital Region Permaculture Guild volunteers. These projects needs more help, here is how to get more information and stay in touch:

It certainly felt great to see different communities and volunteers work together to improve the lives of the South End residents. It is very unfortunate that this day ended up on a much sadder note though, with the death of Albany High junior Tyler Rhodes. He was tragically murdered by two teens inside Hoffman Park at 7pm, a few blocks away. He was one of four teens who worked with the original VLP crew in 2009. Of Tyler Rhodes, Yaminay N. said: “Tyler Rhodes was wonderful. [...] It was his idea to come up with a performance space and to build a stage where kids could express themselves using performance and gather the community around a positive experience. [...] We were so proud of him. We still are. I hope his dream to bring the community together comes true.

Nice work on the very encouraging projects and people. I didn’t know Tyler Rhodes, but know several that did, and it’s been an impressive and surprising variety of people that thought so much of him…. May his legacy and these projects and co-operation prosper…
